THREE BOOKS ON THE JAPANESE PAINTER JAKUCHU
"Nobuo, Tsuji. Jakuchu Wonderland.
Kyoto: Miho Museum, 2009. First edition. 366 Pages, lavishly illustrated in colour. A magnificent catalogue of Jakuchu’s work from collection in and outside Japan also featuring recently discovered works by the artist. Jakuchu was a Japanese painter of the mid-Edo period when Japan had closed its doors to the outside world. Many of his paintings concern traditionally Japanese subjects, particularly chickens and other birds. Many of his otherwise traditional works display a great degree of experimentation with perspective, and with other very modern stylistic elements. Scarce!
Tsuji, Nobuo. Life and works of Jakuchu Ito.
Tokyo: Bijutsu Shuppan Sha, 1974. First Edition. 4 Pages of English introduction followed by a list of plates. 57 tipped in colour plates. illustrated throughout with black and white reproductions and signatures. Japanese text. Slipcase. Very Rare!
Hickman, Money L. & Sato, Yasuhiro. The Paintings of Jakuchu.
New York: Harry N. Abrahams, 1989. First Edition. 222 Pages, 169 illustrations, 97 plates in colour, notes, bibliography. Catalogue of the first U.S. exhibition of one of the most important Japanese artists. A wonderful book with full colour images, accompanied by an explanatory text."
