A processional cross is used in the Roman Catholic liturgy mainly for the ceremonial entry of a festive mass. Also they are used for processions and pilgrimages. The tradition of leading a procession by carrying a cross mounted on a long pole originates from the early Middle Ages. After the entry in the church, the crosses are often used also as alter crosses and are visibly displayed close to the alter. Das sogenannte Vortragekreuz dient in der römisch-katholischen Liturgie hauptsächlich dem feierlichen Einzug bei einer festlichen Messe. Es findet aber auch ähnliche Verwendung bei Prozessionen und Wallfahrten.
