A Meissen porcelain figure group 'The Good Father', modelled by Johann Carl Schönheit (1730-1805), depicting a father and his three children seated on a bench, a dog watching beside them, on an oval base, crossed sword mark, incised 'H98', 21cm high This group of figures belongs to an ensemble, which presents the ideal image of the family in the Age of Enlightenment. The counterpart to this work is ‘The Good Mother’, modelled by Michel Victor Acier and Johann Carl Schönheit. The present porcelain sculpture depicts an intimate scene in a bourgeois home. A father seated on a bench in casual clothes with a bonnet, dressing gown and slippers, lovingly plays with his three frolicking children. A small dog seated on the left of the oval pedestal observes the scene with interest. A moralistic depiction of an idyllic family life with an expression of humanity and sincerity. Condition report: Girl in yellow dress missing foot, fathers left foot re-stuck. Chip to the father's hat.
