Description

Attributed to William Aikman (1682-1731) Portrait of Lord Charles Kerr of Cramond (1668-1735), half length, in a red mantle Oil on canvas 74 x 60cm Provenance: The Kerr family and by descent; Sworders, 27 April 2010, Lot 657; Wood Hall, Arkesden, Essex. Lord Charles Kerr of Cramond was the second son of the 1st Marquess of Lothian. He married Janet Murray, daughter of Sir David Murray, 2nd Baronet of Stanhope, in 1709 and they had 15 children. Lord Charles was appointed Director of Chancery for Scotland in 1703 and Keeper of the Quarter Seal of Scotland. Condition report: Oil on canvas which has been lined. The canvas is in plane and the tension is stiff. The paint layer is generally stable although there are localised areas of slightly lifting paint following the age cracks. There are passages of wear and abrasion in the sitter's face and wig. An old damage at the lower edge of the painting has been poorly retouched. The varnish is yellowed, milky and dull. The frame has suffered from losses to the decorative gilding and some areas have been retouched with bronze paint.
