William Smith (19th century) Portrait of Mrs Eleanor Lovell, half-length, seated, wearing black with a lace mob cap and pink ribbon, and holding a book Signed and inscribed on the reverse ‘Eleanor Lovell / Aged 61, October 30th 1851’ / painted for / William Chadwick Grimsdick / by Wm. Smith 1854', oil on canvas 96 x 75cm Provenance: Wood Hall, Arkesden, Essex. Condition report: Oil on canvas which is unlined. The canvas tension is poor and there are severe undulations running vertically down the painting. At the lower edge are two old holes which have been repaired from the reverse with canvas patches. There is more recent damage to the canvas with associated paint loss, including a hole on the sitter's arm. The paint layer is in a good condition. There is a thin varnish layer which is semi-matte, clear and even. There are scattered accretions and surface dirt on top of the varnish. Old gilt frame has been painted with gold paint.
