Description

A giant English twin fusee carriage clock, late 19th century, with Hong Kong horse racing provenance, the silvered dial engraved with foliage on a coffered ground with black Roman numerals, the centre with stylised palmettes, the twin fusee movement with lever platform escapement, compensated bi-metallic balance, striking and repeating the hour on a gong, the backplate signed 'G. Falconer & Co. Hong Kong', in a gilt brass and four-glass case, with a reeded handle to the top, the case engraved, 'Hong Kong Races 1893, Mr Derick-Hunter's 'Khedive', Wong-nei-chong stakes, 'Steadfast' Compradore's Cup, German Cup, 'Timekeeper' Consolation Stakes, Ridden by Mr I. Midwood', 15cm wide 12cm deep 25cm high The Happy Valley Racecourse was built in 1845 by British colonialists on marshland and paddy fields, whose original name is commemorated in the 'Wong-nei-chong Stakes'. The land was drained and the river diverted to enable the construction of the course, which lay on the only available flat land. Over time, the racecourse became a social hub for Hong Kong's European and Chinese populations. The first races were originally run with military horses, but later native Chinese ponies ('China ponies') were used, subsequently replaced by Arab horses in the professional era in the 1970s. The four races won by Mr Midwood for Mr Derick-Hunter between 23 and 25 February 1893 were: 'The Wong-nei-chong Stakes' half mile, at odds of 11.1, won in 60.75 seconds. 'The Compradore's Cup' one mile, at odds of 10.12, won in 2 minutes 13.5 seconds. 'The German Cup' one and a quarter miles, at odds of 10.12, won in 2 minutes 44.5 seconds. 'The Consolation Stakes' once round, at odds of 10.9, won in 1 minute 55.5 seconds.
