The box is mounted with ruyi-shaped fittings and lock plate, all in huangtong. Enclosing a slightly arched and paneled carrying handle flanked by reticulated scrolling spandrels with both side of the handle. The Zitan wood displays a dense hardwood, with purplish patina over brown-black shades tone. Gilt brass accent finely mounted on corners of handles, spandrels and base. Zitan is an extremely dense wood which sinks in water. It is a member of the rosewood family and is botanically classified in the Pterocarpus genus. The lumber is blackish-purple in hue, and its fibers are loaded with deep red pigments which have been used for dye throughout the ages.
