A CHINESE DOUCAI MONK'S CAP EWER AND COVER
The form of this ewer comes from Tibetan metalwork; because the top reminded Chinese patrons of the hats worn by Tibetan monks, it was given the name 'monk’s cap ewer' (sengmaohu).
The ewer is elegantly potted with a bulbous body raised on a short splayed foot, below a curved handle with a ruyi-head tab, decorated with kids at play in a landscape, set between a band of ruyi heads and upright plantain leaves. The bottom with a Chinese Chenghua six character mark.
22 cm. height, 25.5 cm. width
