9th-12th century AD. An iron axehead with slender blade and chin to the lower edge; round socket with long scooped extensions to the rear; mounted on a custom-made stand. Cf. Arbman, H. Birka I: Die Gräber, Uppsala, 1940, pl.14(1"). 797 grams total, 16cm including stamd (6 1/4"). From a private British art and weaponry collection; previously acquired 1970-2000.
