14th century AD. A pewter pilgrim's badge formed as a gothic arch with lateral attachment loops, mural arch with standing nude figure holding the frame standing on two communion wafers marked with crosses resting among flames, lateral female(?) figure with bucket to the left, two smaller winged figures above; base with blackletter legend 'zu unserm herren zu passaw' (for our masters in Passau"). See discussion in Marcus, J. R. The Jew in the Medieval World: A Source Book, 1938. 9.08 grams, 56mm (2 1/4"). From the property of a Cambridgeshire gentleman; formerly in a collection formed prior to 2000. The scene probably refers to events of the year 1477 when the rumour sprang up that some of the city's Jewish citizens had acquired stolen communion wafers from the church of St Mary and had desecrated them privately by piercing them in an arcane ritual. Upon discovery, the wafers miraculously left the premises of their own accord, the Jews were seized and tortured before execution. One of the tortures involved burning their feet - which may be the meaning of the flames around the central figure's feet in the badge's scene.
