Published 1856 AD. Smith, Charles Roach, Inventorium Sepuchrale, for Subscribers only, 1856; hardback; many plates, some coloured. 1.6 kg, 29.5 x 22.5cm (11 1/2 x 9"). This work publishes the original notes of the Rev Brian Faussett during his excavations of Kentish Saxon burial grounds in the period 1757-1773 AD, including the cemeteries at Gilton, Kingston (including the discovery of the famed Kingston Brooch), Sibertswold, Barfriston, Beakesbourne, Chartham and Crundale. Faussetts' collection was bought by Joseph Mayer of Liverpool in 1855, after the British Museum had declined to purchase it from Faussett's family; the collection is to this day held in the Liverpool Museum and Mayer arranged for the excavation notes to be published by Smith for subscription only (with 327 subscribers listed, including many institutions and with several members of the Faussett and Mayer families) with plates illustrating many of the finds. An important publication and a fascinating insight into 18th century British archaeology; no original example being offered at the time of cataloguing.
