Rare 17th Century model of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, Jerusalem, in olivewood, intricately inlaid with mother-of-pearl, bone and ebony with rosettes, lozenges and stellar motifs, with removable sections, the main dome lifting to reveal the interior, the central tower surrounded by four panels inscribed in Latin with the four points of the compass, in front of the main entrance an inlaid design of the Jerusalem cross, 42.5cm long x 37cm diameter Provenance: By family descent Footnote The Church of the Holy Sepulcher was built over the tomb of Christ. These models were made Franciscan monks in Jerusalem's cloisters. An almost identical example listed in an inventory of 1674 can be found in the National Museum, Copenhagen (Sultan, Shah and Great Mughal, Copenhagen, 1996, no. 317, p. 344). A model of the actual sepulcher, published by John Tradescant (Musaeum Tradescantianum or A Collection of rarities preserved at South London neer London, London, 1956) is now in the Ashmolean Museum Oxford
