A pair of engraved bronze shield bosses, India, 13th-14th century, of rounded form with openwork domed central roundel, pseudo-inscription around mouth, the wide base with dense design of abstract flower heads, mounted on metal plinths, each approx. 20.2cm. diam. (2) Provenance: Acquired during the 1960’s - 1970’s in Iran In the UK since 1981 A number of objects of this general shape survive, they are of varying sizes, some are inscribed and a few, like these are in pairs. It is most likely they are some of the earliest surviving examples of Islamic bosses for organic shields or may alternatively have been used for close combat training with swords. For another pair and further reading see B. Mohammed, Arts of the Muslim Knights: The Furusiyya Art Foundation Collection, Skira, 2008, cat. no. 344.
