A substantial gold finger ring comprising a D-section hoop with transverse collar and hatched panel to each shoulder; the thick ellipsoid bezel with scalloped rim; the bezel inset with a large late Roman or early Byzantine table-cut garnet probably made in Constantinople. 11.55 grams, 26.17mm overall, 22.79mm internal diameter (approximate size British T, USA 9 1/2, Europe 21.26, Japan 20) (1"). Ex Belgian art market; formerly in the De Smet family collection since 1972; accompanied an independent specialist report and valuation by graduate gemmologist and jewellery expert Anna Rogers, GIA GG, BA, Gem-A, ref. no.163808/7/10/2020; this lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by AIAD certificate number no.10229-163808.
