5th-8th century AD. A hollow piriform oil lamp with volute scrolls to the nozzle and flange to the rim; strap ring handle and leaf-shaped reflector plate to the rear, the central hole originally with a lid. See Olcay, Y., 'Lighting methods in the Byzantine period and finding of glass lamps in Anatolia' in Journal of Glass Studies, Vol. 43, (2001), pp.77-87. 138 grams, 93mm (3 1/2"). From a private collection formed in the Netherlands; previously in a European collection formed prior to 1980. In Byzantium single lamps were called candelai, photogogoi, kaniskia, thryallides, crateres in the registers. Lamps for everyday use were made of glass and pottery, those designed for special purposes were made of silver and bronze, and some rare examples were gilded.
