16th-5th century BC. A black limestone cylinder seal, drilled vertically for suspension; accompanied by a museum-quality impression and a typed and signed scholarly note issued by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: 'The surface appears to consist of an abstract design of lines, with a double ruling around most of the one end, and two rulings around the middle. The space is then filled with mostly straight but some curving strokes. There is some mystery about this seal. The end with the double ruling looks like an end indeed, but the opposite end is apparently worn or damaged, and it is possible that we have what was once meant as one end only of a much bigger seal. Perhaps the seal broke in manufacture, and the piece we have is an attempt to make something of a broken end. It probably dates to c. 1500-500 B.C. and comes from Syria/Anatolia.' 4.9 grams, 24mm (1"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; item number 2903; academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s; and accompanied by a copy of a typed and signed scholarly note by the Professor.
