3rd millennium BC. A fossiliferous limestone cylinder seal, drilled vertically for suspension; accompanied by a a museum-quality impression and typed and signed scholarly note issued by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: 'Cylinder seal of black stone with white spots. A contest scene of four figures on their hind legs is shown, symmetrically arranged. On the right is a bull-man grappling with a lion, on the left a hair hero is grappling with a buffalo. This is an Akkadian seal from Babylonia, c. 2300-2200 B.C. It is a fine example of the naturalistic style of this period. Though the surface is a little worn, the fine quality of the work is still plain. The scene shows heroes grappling with powerful animals with their bare hands, an indication of the military ethic if this period.' 21.9 grams, 33mm (1 1/4"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; item number 7; academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s; and accompanied by a copy of a typed and signed scholarly note by the Professor.
