20th-17th century BC. A deep-cut grey mottled jasper cylinder seal with seven facetted sides, drilled vertically for suspension; accompanied by a museum-quality impression and an old scholarly note, typed and signed by W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology, University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: 'Four standing figures compose the design. Second from the right is the sun-god Shamash, in long robe falling in creases and open at the front where one leg projects with foot resting on foot-stool. He is holding his saw-weapon in one hand. Behind him stands a nude human figure with hands at the waist. In front is a human worshipper in long robe, raising one hand, and on the left is an introducing goddess in long flounced robe raising one hand. There is a single line of cuneiform inscription. This is an Old Babylonian seal, c. 1900-1600 BC....The writing has not been deciphered so far: it may be the ancient owner's name, or the name of a god.' 6.21 grams, 23mm (1"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; item number V-670; academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s; accompanied by an original typed and signed scholarly note by Professor Wilfrid George Lambert.
