Early Dynastic Period, 2900-2350 BC. A sub-rectangular bifacial clay tablet with lightly incised grid to each flat face, pictograms and proto-cuneiform(?); old dealer's ticket stating 'S1. Early dynastic. Possibly mathematics tablet'. 190 grams, 11.1cm (4 1/4"). Part of a specialised collection of cuneiform texts, the property of a London gentleman; examined by Professor Wilfrid George Lambert FBA (1926-2011), historian, archaeologist, and specialist in Assyriology and Near Eastern archaeology, in the late 1980s and early 1990s; this small collection is exceptional for the variety of types, including some very rare and well preserved examples; collection number S1; accompanied by an old identification label to the reverse and associated identification slip.
