1st-2nd century AD. A carved stone head of a youthful male with Julian hairstyle; stern facial features with a narrow mouth, square chin, slender nose, lentoid eyes with drilled pupils; mounted on a custom-made stand. Cf. Ross, A., Pagan Celtic Britain, London, 1967, fig.51, and discussion. 13.3 kg total, 39cm including stand (15 1/4"). Property of a London gentleman; formerly with Mahboubian Gallery, London, UK; acquired before 1972; accompanied by an old museum-quality photograph reference number 428714. The head is provincial Roman work displaying the signature wavy hairstyle of the the Julian dynasty. The almond-shaped eyes betray its likely origin in the 'Celtic' world, with parallels from Ireland to Central Europe. The piece has a parallel in the stone bust of Antenociticus discovered at Benwell, Northumberland in a Roman-period shrine dedicated to a local god with military associations.
