14th-15th century AD. A seal with shield-shaped matrix, hexagonal shank and pierced finial for suspension; accompanied by a museum-quality impression; the stamp design is a stag's head surmounted by a Christian cross, panel above with inscription 'LELS' a shortened form of Anglo-French LEL S[V] meaning 'I am loyal/faithful (and hence the message beneath this seal is genuine and to be believed); the cross between the stag’s antlers is an allusion to the vision of St Eustace (and also of St Hubert) who saw an image of the crucified Christ between the antlers of a stag. 4.03 grams, 17mm (3/4"). Property of a Sussex, UK, gentleman; found near Canterbury, Kent, UK, in the mid 1990s. [No Reserve]
