13th-early 14th century AD. A group of four British early medieval lead seals, each sold with a modern impression, transcription and translation: a 13th century discoid personal seal matrix with legend 'WILLI ATE PETTE', or 'seal of William Pitt', with incised circular border enclosing a star motif at the centre (cf. Juliana atte Pette (Essex, 1327) ATE PETTE means 'at the pit' - the original bearer of this ‘locative’ surname lived by/near a pit); a 13th century discoid personal seal matrix with legend '‘SIG WILLI FILI GALFRIDI', or 'seal of William son of Geoffrey', with incised circular border enclosing a lis design in the centre; a 13th century discoid personal seal matrix with legend 'SIGILL RADVLFI F HVB'TI', or 'seal of Ralph son of Hubert', incised circular border with lys design at the centre; a 13th or early 14th century vesica-shaped personal seal matrix with legend 'S' MARGARETE V KOWIL', of 'seal of Margaret Cowell', surrounding a wheat ear, lug to reverse. 105 grams total, 25-33mm (1 - 1 1/4").
