Private possession, Italy Provenance Paris 1957 (Galerie Rive Gauche), Vingt peintures de Gentilini, cat. no. 3, full-page colour illus. 4 Born near the town of Ravenna, famous for its early wall paintings and mosaics, the painter Franco Gentilini initially worked as a ceramicist and in the field of wall painting - together with Giorgio Morandi in Bologna, among other projects. In the late 1920s he often travelled to Paris and was invited to a number of Venice Biennales. Living in Rome from the early 1930s, he quickly gained artistic renown as part of the group centred around the Caffé Ragno, which served as a gathering place for artists belonging to the Scuola Romana, such as Cagli, Mucci, Falqui, Sinisgalli and de Libero. However, Gentilini also frequently stayed in Venice during this period and, as a favourite artist of Carlo Cardazzo, founder of the Galleria Cavallino, his work was exhibited together with that of De Chirico, Carrà, Fontana and Morandi. Cardazzo was among the art dealers favoured by the Guggenheim family. The works that Franco Gentilini created after World War II are particularly cherished by private collectors; in the 1950s he worked on a series of “cathedrals”. The special charm of these works is founded on the graphic reduction of their motif - as in the case here, which features the iconic Venetian architecture of St Mark's Square with a view of the basilica as well as staffage figures - and the haptic effect of a fresco. Der nahe der für ihre frühen Wandgemälde und -mosaike berühmten Stadt Ravenna geborene Maler Franco Gentilini arbeitet zuerst als Keramiker und auf dem Gebiet der Wandmalerei - u.a. auch mit Giorgio Morandi zusammen in Bologna. In den späten 1920er Jahren ist er oft in Paris und wird zu zahlreichen Biennalen nach Venedig eingeladen. Ab Anfang der 1930er Jahre in Rom beheimatet, wird ihm schnell künstlerischer Ruhm zuteil als Teil der Gruppe um das Caffé Ragno, das als Treffpunkt der zur Scuola Romana zählenden Künstler wie Cagli, Mucci, Falqui, Sinisgalli und de Libero dient. Gentilini hält er sich in dieser Zeit aber auch häufig in Venedig auf und wird als bevorzugter Künstler von Carlo Cardazzo, dem Gründer der Galleria Cavallino, zusammen mit De Chirico, Carrà, Fontana und Morandi ausgestellt. Cardazzo ist einer der favorisierten Kunsthändler der Familie Guggenheim. Die nach dem II. Weltkrieg entstandenen Werke von Franco Gentilini werden von Privatsammlern besonders geschätzt, in den 1950er Jahren arbeitet er an einer Serie von „Kathedralen“. Der besondere Charme der Arbeiten begründet sich in der graphischen Reduktion des Motivs - wie hier der ikonischen venezianischen Architektur der Platzanlage mit Blick auf die Basilica di San Marco mit ihrer Figurenstaffage - und der haptischen Wirkung eines Freskos.
