A Ming dynasty jade bird Scholar's brush-rest, 16th-17th Century, of large size, grasping a leaf stalk and with upturned tail, tail for use as a brush-rest for a scholars desk, naturalisticly worked detail, stone of a mottled celadon color with ink stains and mottling.
6 1/2" L., 16.5 cm.

Lot Notes: It is said that painting and calligraphy should be inspired by nature and as such scholarly objects should base their form from nature. Large jade animals from Ming period are especially rare and desirable. This distinguished example incorporates the tradition of Ming jade animal carving but in large size and designed for use as a Scholar's desk ornament.
