A carved agate snuff bottle, Qing Dynasty 18th/19th c.. Probably Suzhou School, of impressive and large size agate snuff bottle, rounded square form with raised foot ring, skin relief carved with deer, monkey, bee and bird motif with pine tree, later stopper. 2 5/8" h., 6.6 cm. [excluding stopper]
Provenance: From a Montreal Collector Lot Notes:Visual puns, often made by using homophones, are a popular design language in Chinese art. In addition to being a zodiac animal, the monkey also symbolizes a noble title, because it is pronounced the same as the word for marquis (hou) in Chinese. Here, monkey, bees, magpie, and deer are combined to convey “giving great wealth and bestowing a noble title???? (jue lu feng hou).
