3rd-1st millennium BC. A mixed group of four cylinder seals composed of three limestone and one composition; two accompanied by a museum-quality impression and a typed and signed scholarly note issued by W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: (1) 'Cylinder Seal of Fawn Stone 23 x 13 mm. The design shows two heroes attacking a quadruped being held up. The hero on the left is holding the animal up by a front leg while gripping a dagger in the other hand. The hero on the right is holding the animal by one horn, raising one leg and gripping a weapon in the other hand. A vertical cut serves as a terminal. This is a rare seal, not easily dated, but perhaps Akkadian or early Neo-Sumerian, c. 2300-2100 B.C. It is chipped and worn.' (2) 'Cylinder Seal of Black Stone 28 x 13 mm. The design shows a row of four walking men or women, in longish robes, all holding up a kind of hoop in one hand (in front) and holding something down in the other hand behind. This comes from west central Asia and is an extremely rare item which is therefore difficult to date precisely. The seal has clearly been re-used, since one side is very badly worn, but the design there is quite clear, as indeed all around. Most likely the new design dates to c. 1200-900 B.C.' 25 grams total, 23-28mm (1"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; item number W-160, W-167,Y-305, W-537; academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s; accompanied by two original typed and signed scholarly notes by Professor Wilfrid George Lambert.[4]
