40-43 AD. Obv: CARA around pellet-in-ring. Rev: rearing winged horse right. S. 364A; BMC 2385-89; ABC 1379; Coin News, November 2020, pp.40-41.0.33 grams. ("). From the private collection of the vendor's grandfather; the collection formed between 1980-2000. Caratacus, son of 'Old King Cole' and member of Britain's first royal family, has gone down in history as a famed freedom fighter, a great British hero who resisted the Roman invasion of Britain in 43 AD. Caratacus was eventually betrayed and taken to Rome in shackles, where it was expected he would be executed, but was pardoned by Emperor Claudius. David Sear, considered the world's foremost expert on ancient numismatics, dubbed the discovery in 2020 of the unique gold stater of Caratacus one of 'the most exciting numismatic discoveries of the 21st century, if not all time.' Up until this point, only three silver units and three minims were known for Caratacus; the coin on offer here is one of those precious three minims of the legendary Caratacus.
