A MUGHAL CARVED IVORY PRIMING FLASK. India, probably Deccan, late 17th c. Length 27.5 cm Made in two curved sections, carved in relief with multiple animals, the nozzle formed as a antelope’s heads mirrored over the upper and lower surfaces, the horns presented in openwork and the eyes inset with contrasting beads, and with a makara head and birds forward-facing at the rear of the nozzle section. The larger rear section encircled by carved decorative bands enclosing panels on both sides, filled with antelopes, leopards, birds and fishes, and fitted with brass lever forming the nozzle-closure, pivoting against a simple spring and with a single loop for a suspension cord. Provenance: Formerly in a French private collection. --------------- FEINE ZÜNDKRAUTFLASCHE AUS ELFENBEIN (BARUTDAN). Indien, wohl Deccan, spätes 17. Jh. L 28 cm. Mit Messingklammer und Aufhängeöse. Aus zwei gebogenen, flach reliefierten und teils durchbrochen geschnitzten Elfenbeinprofilen. Ein Doppel-Antilopenkopf mit eingelegten Augen und Vorderbeinen, der durch Vögel und einen Makarakopf ergänzt wird, bildet die Öffnung des Pulverhorns. Ein mit kleinen Messingösen besetztes Band leitet zum Mittelteil über, der Felder mit gratartigen Erhebungen aufweist, in dem Vögel, jagende Raubkatzen mit Antilopen und Fischen abgebildet sind. Den sich verjüngenden Abschluss bilden kunstvoll ineinander verschlungene Vögel und ein Antilopenkopf. Min. rest.
