the wide lobed rim of the box finely carved through deep layers of brown and red lacquer with a chain of archaistic scrolls issuing lotus blossoms and foliage, encircled within a keyfret border, the cover similarly carved with lotus sprigs and foliage, the interior lacquered black and decorated in yellow lacquer with a sprig of chrysanthemum

The base of the box bears a 'Spink & Son Ltd, est. 1666' label and a 'The Minor Arts of China 111, Spink & Son Ltd, 1987' label with the lot number 14.
