BRONZE VAJRA AND GHANTA
TIBET, 19TH/20TH CENTURY
the ghanta with rings of vajras and festoons, the handle with crisp head of a Bodhisattva and vajra-poll, the vajra in matching style (2)
ghanta 18.5cm high
Note:
The vajra and ghanta are the most important ritual implements of Vajrayana Buddhism. The vajra, symbolising the unbreakable Absolute, hardly survives as a ritual object from Buddhist India but is found in Indonesia, Nepal, Tibet and Japan. Paired with the bell, it symbolises compassion or the 'male' skill in means for salvation; the bell is the symbol of supreme knowledge seen as female. Together they constitute a unity for salvation. Held in the right and left hands respectively to make elaborate ritual movements, they are also the attributes of many Buddhist deities.
