Ca. 323 BC - 200 AD. Graeco-Roman Period. A green stone statuette of a falcon catching a snake. The falcon stands on a long and thick plinth with its wings closed against its back. It has one foot on the pinth and another strangling a reared snake. This imagery evokes the falcon god Horus overcoming the snake demon Apophis, an act which Horus had to accomplish as one of the divine guards on Ra's solar boat, while it sailed through the afterlife every night and clashed with Apophis.Size: L:70mm / W:73mm ; 110gFrom a London private family collection; formerly acquired on the UK art market in the 1960s - 1970s; thence by descent.
