Ca. 400-500. Late Roman. A fine glass jar with an apple-shaped body and an everted rim. The most striking feature of this item is the twelve handles attached from the edge of the rim to the shoulder. In a few places, clear glass shines through, but, for the most part, the body is covered in a grey patina with areas of bright iridescence. Good condition. Good quality glass tableware such as this jar was used as a showpiece and perhaps even as an indicator of social standing or wealth within the Late Roman household, especially when displayed in the public area of the house. For glass jars of similar shape, see Bayley, J., Freestone, I., & Jackson, C. (2015). Glass of the Roman World. Oxford And Philadelphia: Oxbow Books, 90. Size: L:70mm / W:85mm ; 109g. Provenance: Property of a West London gentleman; previously in a collection formed on the UK/International art market in the 1970s.
