Ca. 1069-332 BC. Third Intermediate Period - Late Period. A wooden coffin face / mummy mask decorated in polychrome. The face is finely detailed with yellowish skin, large black and white eyes with black cosmetics and eyebrows, and the green top part of a headdress. The plump cheeks appear pushed up to create the effect of a slight smile, evoking a peaceful afterlife. It was originally part of an anthropomorphic coffin; these coffin faces were added separately to create a three dimensional effect in the wood, before the seams were hidden, and it would have been surrounded by the other parts of the headdress on the side. The face gave the coffin both identity and senses; regaining the senses was an important mission of the recently deceased, and many rituals and chapters in the Book of the Dead were devoted to this. Coffins from many periods of Egyptian history depicted eyes in some form to allow the body within to 'see', and here they are enlarged and exaggerated for this purpose. Size: L:with stand: 400mm / W:235mm ; 1.6kg. Provenance: From the important collection of a London doctor A.R; passed by descent to his son; formerly acquired before 2000 on the UK art market.
