2nd-3rd century AD. A rectangular green glass intaglio bearing the profile busts of Emperor Caracalla and his mother, Julia Domna, facing; held in a collector's capsule. 0.2 grams, 9mm (1/4"). Property of a gentleman from Vienna; from his private collection formed since 1970. Julia Domna, as wife of Emperor Septimius Severus, was Roman empress from 193-211 AD. Their son, Caracalla (198-217 AD), was later joint ruler with his brother, Geta, until Caracalla had Geta assassinated. As ruler, Caracalla found matters of administration uninspiring, preferring to leave such mundane duties to his mother.
