2nd-4th century AD. A pair of rectangular blocks with stamped mark 'LEG XIIII' (LEGIO QUARTA DECIMA GEMINA) for The 'Twinned Fourteenth Legion'. Cf. Beutler, F., Farka, C., Gugl, C., Humer, F., Kremer, G., Polhammer, E. (ed.), Der Adler Roms, Carnuntum und die Armee der Caesaren, Bad Voslau, 2017, pp.217-218, nn, 247-148. 4.33 kg total, 13.5-35cm (5 1/2 - 4"). From a North Yorkshire collection formed since the 1980s; thence by descent. The Legio XIIII Gemina Martia Victrix ('Winning Twinned Fourteenth Legion of Mars') was early stationed in Moguntiacum (Mainz, Germania Superior) since AD 9. It was one of four legions used by Aulus Plautius in the Roman invasion of Britain in AD 43. It built its legionary fortress at Mancetter on Watling Street and by AD 58 it had moved its base to Wroxeter. The legion was based in Carnuntum (Pannonia, nowadays Austria) from the early 2nd century AD. Notwithstanding this camp was its permanent base for the next three centuries, various detachments (vexillationes) of the Legion operated in all the Empire, and we can find tiles of this legion, apart from Carnuntum, in Britannia, in Germania Superior and at Zeugma, on the borders between Syria Coele and Osroene.
