1st century BC-2nd century AD and later. A sheet-gold Hercules' club pendant, adorned with granulation along its length, including filigree spirals and inset carnelian, nicolo and green gemstones, with carnelian and turquoise cluster; the apex later, suspended on a modern multiple loop-in-loop chain, terminating in a hook-and-loop closure. See similar style pendant in Yavtushenko, I. ed., Masterpieces of Platar, Kiev, 2004, p.67. 10.15 grams, 43cm (17"). Property of a gentleman from Vienna; from his private collection formed since 1970. In the Graeco-Roman period, the jewellery become more exquisite than before, due to the wide use of the technique of granulation, filigree and inlay. Polychrome style originated from the countries of Near East, therefore it was not a surprise that the cities of Syria and Egypt were the main centres of jewellery production.
