Description
Translation provided by Youdao
4th-5th century AD. A carved bone dagger handle with tapering body and crescentic finial; slit to the upper face and one long side; pierced. See similar specimens in Landes, C., Le cirque et les courses de chars Rome-Byzance, Paris, 1990, figs.67a-71b. 25.2 grams, 84mm (3 1/4"). From a North Yorkshire collection formed since the 1980s; thence by descent. The object has a precise parallel in the type of knife handles used by charioteers in circus competitions. These were folding blade knives, used by the aurigae to cut the reins that tied them to horses in case of need. Like the specimens from Rome preserved in the Froehner collection, they were often decorated with images of charioteers or horses. [No Reserve]
