2nd century AD. A bronze finger ring with gem setting and D-shaped hoop, expanding to broad shoulders and a flattened bezel, at the centre of the bezel an oval intaglio setting, probably onyx, with an engraved arm and hand, inscription in Greek letters with a shorter formulation for '?????? ?? ???????' (= in remembrance"). See Henkel, F., Die Romischen Fingerringe Der Rheinlande, Und Der Benachbarten Gebiete, Berlin, 1913, particularly Tafeln XXXII no.809, for similar rings. 3.13 grams, 21.63mm overall, 16.84mm internal diameter (approximate size British G, USA 3 1/4, Europe 4.92, Japan 4) (1"). Property of a gentleman from Vienna; from his private collection formed since 1970. The form of the is ring similar to those of Henig Type II, and it finds parallels in the finger rings from the Snettisham jeweller's hoard.
