2nd century AD. A silver ring with ellipsoid D-section hoop, widening towards the rounded prominent horizontal shoulders, ellipsoid bezel with inscription in Latin 'VOT (US)' i.e. 'a gift for'. Cf. Ruseva-Slokoska, L., Roman Jewellery, Sofia, 1991, item 228, for type. 3.90 grams, 22.11mm overall, 17.30mm internal diameter (approximate size British G, USA 3 1/4, Europe 4.92, Japan 4) (1"). Property of a gentleman from Vienna; from his private collection formed since 1970. The ring belongs to type V of the Ruseva-Slokoska classification. Some rings were votive in nature, with a text expressing a plea for salvation, a promised votive offering or eulogy for happiness and welfare.
