6th-8th century AD. A bronze finger signet ring with octagonal bezel, lozenge decorated loop and the engraved inscription in Greek letters '??? / ???? / ????? / +'. Cf. Baldini Lippolis, I., L'Oreficeria nell'Impero di Costantinopoli tra IV e VII secolo, Bari,1999, no.10, p.211, for a similar ring. 6.08 grams, 22.46mm overall, 17.68mm internal diameter (approximate size British M, USA 6, Europe 12.46, Japan 12) (1"). Property of a gentleman from Vienna; from his private collection formed since 1970. The ring belongs to the type 4 of the Lippolis classification (rings with rounded loop and applied bezel"). The inscription possibly refers to a religious invocation, i.e. 'Light ! (???) Be Zealous!' (???? = ?????) Glory (?? = ????) to Jesus Christ (???), Victory (cross").
