7th century AD. A silver ring with round bezel, engraved with two nimbate saints flanking a long Greek cross. Cf. Baldini Lippolis, I., L'Oreficeria nell'Impero di Costantinopoli tra IV e VII secolo, Bari, 1999, no.18, p.200, for a similar ring. 7.72 grams, 22.66mm overall, 18.85mm internal diameter (approximate size British R, USA 8 1/2, Europe 18 3/4, Japan 18) (1"). Property of a gentleman from Vienna; from his private collection formed since 1970. The ring belongs to the type 1 of the classification of Prof. Isabella Baldini Lippolis, variant with applied bezel of circular form. The Christian iconography of these rings included the cross, an archangel with a cross and a globe, the Virgin and the child and a scene of Christ's life, such as the Annunciation.
