4th-3rd millennium BC. A group of four stone cylinder seals comprising two jasper, one agate, and one limestone; two accompanied by a museum-quality impression and typed and signed scholarly note issued by W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: (1) 'Cylinder Seal of White Limestone 15 x 10 mm. The design consists of three vertical bands of three water creatures each, forming a frieze. This comes from Sumer, south-west Iran, or the Dyala Valley and dates to c. 3000 B.C. It is a little worn, but in fair condition. The design, showing apparently some kind of crabs, is entirely clear.' (2) 'Cylinder Seal of Pink Stone 26 x 9 mm. The design, which is put between upper and lower rulings, shows a pattern of cuts with an eye-shape and chevrons to each side, and two cuts near the top and bottom as a kind of terminal. This is a seal in the Sumerian Jemdet Nasr style, c. 3000 B.C. Such seals have been found throughout Mesopotamia and in Iran, but the stone favours an origin in Sumer. It is in very good condition.' 12 grams total, 16-26mm (1/2 - 1"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; item number 47-14, T-270, V-519, W-487; academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s; accompanied by one original and one copy of typed and signed scholarly notes by Professor Wilfrid George Lambert.
