Wang Yuanqi, style name Lutai, was the last of the so called 'Four Wangs', the most prominent painters in the orthodox style of literati painting in the early Qing dynasty. He came from an old scholar family, passed the examinations and went into the service of the Qing government. In 1700 he was appointed a court official and became a member of the Hanlin Academy and a high official of the Kangxi emperor. At the same time he became a brilliant painter in the literati style continuing the style of his grandfather Wang Shimin (1592-1680). He developed an own, unique landscape style by merging ink and color into a dense web of organic structure. The overall composition and delicate coloring of this painting comes very near to the works by his hand-Property from an old Austrian Noble collection-Partly damages due to age
