James Stark (British, 1794-1859) A gypsy encampment beside a woodland track, possibly near Sheringham, Norfolk oil on panel 57 x 77cm Provenance: Trustees of the Will of Arthur George, 3rd Earl of Onslow (1777-1870); W. G. Raphael (d. 1911) and by descent to the present owner of a Suffolk country house Footnote: Literature: Peter Kennedy-Scott, A Romantic Look at Norwich School Landscapes: By a Handful of Great Little Masters, 1998, illus. p. 7 Peter Kennedy-Scott (see Literature) refers to the present painting as a "Lane Scene near Sheringham" and dates it to circa 1820. The Norwich Castle Museum has records of two other paintings called Sheringham, which are vaguely similar in their composition and grouping of trees; however they are in fact imaginary and only loosely based on a real place.
