Edward Stott ARA, British 1855-1918 - Portrait study of a woman, c.1909; pencil and charcoal on paper, heightened with white, studio stamp lower left under mount 'Edward Stott ARA', 25 x 20.5 cm Note: with thanks to Dr. Valerie Webb for her assistance with the cataloguing of this work. The present drawing is a study for 'Two Mothers' painted by Stott in 1909, which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1909, Manchester Art Gallery 1910 and the Fine Art Society in 1919. The model, Anne Dinnage, was also used for the painting 'A Cottage Madonna' (1907), which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1907. Edward Stott is celebrated as the ‘the poet-painter of the twilight’, known for his rural scenes that demonstrate the rustic naturalism of French painter Bastien-Lepage, and his British contemporaries, George Clausen and Walter Osborne.
