PROVENANCE: From Audubon, New Orleans Private Collector. Dimensions: Heigth: 50 cm, width: 15.8 cm Pair of Chinese Qing Dynasty Wucai Porcelain Lion Statues. The Lions takes a standing posture with an slightly bowed neck, with lionet in the mid and another one with carrying a ball atop the vase. The Lions decorated with yellow base colour against its turquoise blue ground. All reserved in wucai design color. These stylized guardian lions, known in Chinese as shi or shishi , stone-lions. The Fu lions are traditionally carved from decorative stone, such as porcelain, marble and granite or cast in bronze or iron. Because of the high cost of these materials and the labour required to produce them, private use of guardian lions was traditionally reserved for wealthy or elite families. Indeed, a traditional Symbol of a family's Wealth or social status was the placement of guardian lions in front of the family home.
