Renouard, Estienne, 12:14; Schreiber, 15; Mortimer, French, 326;Adams, A-1229.Princeps edition of the famous itinerary of the Roman Empire, the author of which is not certain. It is sometimes attributed to Antoninus Pius following the suggestion given by Geoffroy Tory for this edition."Authorship has never been satisfactorily established; the work is sometimes ascribed to Antoninus Pius, following Tory's attribution in this edition. Tory's edition was prepared from a manuscript owned by Christophe de Longueil. The preliminary matter includes verses by Gérard de Vercel, praising Tory and condemning poor printing practices of the period. Bernard cites this text as Tory's second work for Estienne" (Mortimer). "This Antonine itinerary is an important itinerary of the whole Roman empire, describing all roads and crossroads, with indications of distances from place to place. This little volume (undoubtedly the tiniest production of Henri Estienne's press) was edited by GeoffroyTory whose puzzling woodcut monogram appears here for the first time" (Schreiber). A very fine copy, with some old notes crossed out on the title, preserved in a very nice binding by Simier.Provenance: Charles Athanase baron Walckenaer (gilt bookplate on the back cover) - Ambroise Firmin-Didot (bookplate, sale 1878, lot 659: "First edition, it is very rare") - Thomas Brooke F.S.A.Armitage Bridge (bookplate)Itinerarium provinciarum omniumAntonini Augustini, cum fragmento eiusdem.
