Jerg Haas (1940-), Chinese name Xia Hansi, was a teacher at Shanghai International Studies University from 1965 to 1967, after an invitation by Zhou Enlai. While in China, he was an avid collector of Chinese paintings. Ren Yi, style name Bonian, was the most famous figure painter of the Shanghai Painting School. His father was a portrait painter and he showed talent for painting at an early age. As a young man Ren Yi served in the army of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. Later he went to Shanghai and learned to paint from Ren Xun (1835-1893), a noted painter of figures and flowers and birds. He settled in Shanghai and made his living by selling his pictures. His figure paintings are mostly narrative, based on historical anecdotes. The figures are often depicted in a distinguished humoristic style like the figure of the servant in this painting. The landscape elements show his vivid and expressive brushwork together with a fine colouring.-Acquired at Klefisch, Cologne, 10th Nov 1990, auction 45, no. 1258-Minor restorations
