Description
Translation provided by Youdao
9th-13th century AD. A forged iron spearhead with tubular socket and lozenge-shaped blade, strong midrib. Cf. for similar spear head Nicolle, D., 'Raiders of the Ice War' in Military Illustrated, March 1996, no.94, pp.26-29, fig.p.28. 373 grams, 33.4cm (13"). Property of a London gallery; previously from a private British collection; formerly acquired from a European gentleman; acquired in the 1990s and earlier. Lithuanian and Baltic infantry mostly fought with spears and axes. Whereas the Letts and other more northern Baltic tribes purchased arms and armours from the neighbouring Russians, most Lithuanian and Prussian sword-blades originated in Germany, but hilts were made and added locally. Spears were often purchased from arm traders, though equipment was also captured in battle. Condition Report Fair condition, cleaned and conserved.
