A hand-forged iron axehead with triangular-section narrow blade widening to a broad curved edge with square chin, D-section socket with flat panel to the rear; from the Baltic Sea area. See Glosek, M., Pó?no?redniowieczna bro? obuchowa w zbiorach polskich, Warszawa-?ód?, 1996, pl.XII, p.113, lett.F. 381 grams, 13.7cm (5 1/2"). Property of a London gallery; previously from a private British collection; formerly acquired from a European gentleman; acquired in the 1990s and earlier. The shape of the axe is similar to the type VIIF of the Glosek classification, and seems mainly occur in the medieval territories of Poland, Lithuania and Pomerania, dated between the 12th and 15th century.
